Custom vs. Stock Cabinets: A Guide for Lake Norman Homeowners

A lot of homeowners who call us about custom cabinets in Cornelius and around Lake Norman have already done the big box store walk. They've wandered the cabinet aisle, opened a few sample doors, maybe even priced out a whole kitchen. And now they're standing in their own kitchen wondering, "Is custom actually worth it?"

Sometimes it is. Sometimes it isn't. We build custom cabinets for a living, so yes, we're a little biased. But we'd much rather you end up with the right cabinets than talk you into something you don't need.

The truth about stock cabinets

Stock cabinets are made ahead of time in standard sizes, usually in 3-inch steps. You pick from what's on the shelf, and the installer makes it work in your space.

Here's the thing, though. Your kitchen wasn't built in 3-inch steps. So when the cabinets don't quite reach the wall, those gaps get covered with filler strips. A few inches here, a few inches there, and suddenly you've lost a surprising amount of storage. The finished kitchen can also look just a little off. You might not be able to point to why, but you'll feel it every time you walk in.

Then there's what's inside the box. A lot of mass-produced cabinets are made from particle board and held together with staples. That's fine right up until it gets wet. One slow leak under the sink and particle board swells up like a sponge, and there's no fixing it once it does.

Some brands know shoppers are wary of particle board, so they advertise "real wood" construction instead. It sounds like an upgrade, and technically it is wood. But look a little closer and it's usually ½" Grade D plywood. That's thinner material with a lower-quality grade, and over time it can sag or warp, especially on shelves holding stacks of dinner plates, cast iron pans, or small appliances. "Real wood" and "built to last" aren't always the same thing.

What you get with custom cabinets

Custom starts with a tape measure, not a catalog. We measure the room you actually live in, including the walls that aren't quite square. (Spoiler: most of them aren't.) Then we build every piece to fit exactly. No filler strips, no dead corners, no wasted space.

The fun part is building storage around your real life. The drawer that fits your stand mixer so you're not lifting it out of a bottom cabinet. A pull-out for trash and recycling so they're not living next to the fridge. A coffee station that finally gets the machine off your counter. The stuff that makes you happy every single morning.

And it's built to last. Every cabinet box and shelf we make is ¾" Grade A plywood. That's 50% thicker than the ½" plywood many stock brands use, and it's the highest grade available. It stays flat and strong under heavy loads, handles moisture way better than particle board, and can take years of slammed doors, dishwasher steam, and kids using the drawers as a step stool.

You also get to pick your door style and finish. Crisp white for a lake house kitchen, warm stained wood, a navy island that becomes the thing everyone talks about at parties. It's your call, not whatever's on display that week.

So, which one is right for you?

Stock can be a smart move if you're updating a rental, getting a house ready to sell, or working with a tight budget in a room that happens to fit standard sizes.

Custom is usually worth it if you're planning to stay a while, your space has some quirks, or you're done making things "work." And here's what we hear most from clients once the project is finished: it's not just that it looks great. It's that everything finally has a place.

It's not just kitchens

Some of our favorite projects happen in other rooms. Bathroom vanities that actually fit that awkward little bathroom. Laundry rooms where the detergent and baskets finally have a home instead of piling up on the dryer. Built-in shelving that makes a living room or home office feel finished. Closets that make getting ready in the morning way less chaotic.

How it works

We keep it simple. We start with a consultation to see your space and hear what you have in mind. Then we send a detailed estimate. Once you approve it, you pick your doors and finishes, and we build everything by hand in our Cornelius shop. When it's ready, we install it ourselves, start to finish.
